Description

Ancient Greek. Biblical scholarship. A little attitude. And one word you probably didn’t learn in Sunday school.

Who says theology can’t be fun?

This vintage-inspired T-shirt features a distinguished ancient scholar wearing sunglasses, giving a thumbs-up, and proudly holding an open book displaying one rather interesting Greek word:

σκύβαλον (skybalon)

The shirt declares:

“GREEK: IT’S NOT JUST A LANGUAGE… IT’S A BETTER WAY TO SAY CRAP.”

But here’s the best part: the joke actually comes from the Bible!

Wait… Is That Word Really in Scripture?

Yes!

In Philippians 3:8, the Apostle Paul uses the plural form of this word, σκύβαλα, when explaining that he counts everything as worthless compared to the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus.

Most English Bibles translate the word as “rubbish,” “garbage,” or “dung.” But some scholars argue that it carries a stronger, potentially vulgar force—something closer to “crap” or perhaps an even stronger English expression.

Paul’s point was not to be crude for the sake of being crude. He was emphasizing, in striking language, the incomparable worth of Christ.

And that’s what makes this shirt more than just a clever joke.

A Little Humor With a Serious Theological Point

Jesus warned that we will give an account for every careless word we speak (Matthew 12:36). Yet Scripture itself sometimes uses forceful, earthy language to communicate important truths.

That raises an interesting question: Is a word inherently inappropriate, or does its moral significance depend on its meaning, context, intention, and effect?

Words matter. Context matters. And Christians should be intentional about how they communicate.

This shirt offers an entertaining way to start that conversation.

Wear it to church gatherings, Bible studies, seminary classes, theological conferences, or anywhere people appreciate a little biblical humor.

And when someone asks what the Greek word means, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to explain Philippians 3:8.

Of course, you can also just enjoy an ancient philosopher wearing sunglasses and giving a thumbs-up.

Perfect for pastors, seminarians, Greek students, Bible teachers, theologians, and anyone who believes serious theology and a good sense of humor belong together.
